Maintaining good iron levels is essential for regular blood donation. Low hemoglobin is the most common reason donors are deferred. Here's what to eat to keep your iron strong.

Top iron-rich foods

  • Spinach and leafy greens — easy to add to any meal
  • Lentils, chickpeas, beans — staples of Indian cuisine, naturally iron-rich
  • Red meat (mutton, lean beef) — heme iron, easiest for the body to absorb
  • Fortified cereals — check the label for iron content
  • Pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds — sprinkle on salads or curd
  • Jaggery (gur) — traditional Indian iron source

Boost absorption with vitamin C

Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C — lemon, oranges, amla, tomatoes, and bell peppers. Vitamin C dramatically increases iron absorption.

What to avoid

Tea, coffee, and calcium-rich foods (milk, cheese) can block iron absorption. Avoid them within an hour of iron-rich meals.

Before donation day

  1. Eat an iron-rich meal 2-3 hours before
  2. Drink plenty of water — aim for 500ml extra
  3. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior
  4. Get 7-8 hours of sleep the night before

Your donation experience is much better when your body is well-prepared.
