Donating blood is one of the most meaningful contributions you can make to society. Each donation can save up to 3 lives. This guide walks you through eligibility, the donation process, and recovery.
Who can donate
Anyone aged 18-65, weighing more than 50kg, with hemoglobin above 12.5 g/dL can donate blood every 3 months. You should be feeling well on the day of donation, with no recent illness, infection, or medication that excludes you.
The donation process
The entire visit takes about 45 minutes. The actual blood draw is only 8-10 minutes.
- Registration: fill a short health questionnaire and show ID
- Screening: BP, pulse, temperature, hemoglobin check
- Donation: 350-450 ml is collected via a sterile single-use kit
- Refreshments: rest 10-15 minutes with juice and a light snack
After donation
- Drink plenty of fluids for 24 hours
- Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 12 hours
- Eat iron-rich foods (spinach, lentils, red meat)
- Keep the bandage on for 4-6 hours
Your body replaces the donated plasma within 24-48 hours and red cells within 4-6 weeks. You'll feel completely normal the same day.
